World Press Freedom Day
United Nations Assembly declared may 3 to be world press freedom day or just World Press Day to raise awareness of the freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to uphold the right of freedom of expressions under article of 1948.
World Press Day has only been celebrated since 1993, it has much deeper roots in the UNO , Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights states that everyone “has the right to freedom of opinion and expression, this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, Each year since 1997, World Press Freedom Prize is awarded to honor the work of an individual or an organization defending or promoting freedom of expression,The award is named after a journalist murdered in 1986 after denouncing drug barons. it was awarded to a Russian investigative reporter who was murdered in a contract-style killing in 2006.
How 3 May celebrated
The day is concerns about celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost lives in the exercise of their profession. In 1993 the UN General Assembly following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference, It serves as an occasion to inform citizens of violations of press freedom – a reminder that in dozens of countries around the world,publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered.
It is a date to encourage and develop initiatives in favour of press freedom, and to assess the state of press freedom worldwide.It serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom. Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint,abolition, of press freedom. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives.
Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law, theme of the 2018 hlights the importance of an enabling legal environment for press freedom, and gives special attention to the role of an independent judiciary in ensuring legal guarantees for press freedom. At the same time, the theme addresses the role of the media in sustainable development, especially during elections as a watchdog fostering transparency, accountability and the rule of law. The theme aims to explore legislative gaps with regard to freedom of expression and information online, and the risks of regulating online speech.

Press Freedom Day gives people the chance to pay tribute to media professionals who risked or lost their lives in the line of duty. Many communities, organizations and individuals take part in this day through various events such as art exhibitions, dinners featuring keynote speakers, and awards nights to honor those who risked their lives to bring news to the world.
